Eligibility

Q: Can I apply for a grant if I work outside Europe, the Middle East and Africa?
A: The Advances in Psoriasis Research Grant Programme has been set up specifically to encourage and support research in Europe, the Middle East and Africa and is restricted to these areas.

Q: Can I use this grant to add to an existing grant?
A: The Advances in Psoriasis Research Grant Programme has been established by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals to support a greater understanding of the inflammatory pathogenesis of psoriasis and TNF-related skin disorders. The Advances in Psoriasis grant can be used in combination with other grants providing the application clearly details how the funds are to be used.

Q: Can I apply for two grants?
A: It is possible to submit grant applications for different research projects. The final selection process will be blinded and each application will be judged on its own merit.

Q: Can one department be awarded more than one grant?
A: There is no limit to the number of applications from any department. The final selection process will be blinded and each application will be judged on its own merit.

Q: Can the research grant be used to support an ongoing study?
A: The Advances in Psoriasis Research Grant Programme has been established by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals to support discrete studies into the inflammatory pathogenesis of psoriasis and TNF-related skin disorders. It is not intended to fund ongoing studies. However, the grants can be used for new discrete projects following on from previous research.

Q: What are the criteria for research topics?
A: There are no restrictions on the type of research project considered for funding as long as it is focused on advancing the understanding of the inflammatory pathogenesis of psoriasis and TNF-related skin disorders. The project can be laboratory-based or a clinical study. The applications will be judged on the innovative nature of the proposed project and robust scientific rationale, subject to compliance with local, national and GCP/GLP guidelines.

Q: What type of research is acceptable?
A: There are no restrictions on the type of research project considered for funding as long as it is focused on advancing the understanding of the inflammatory pathogenesis of psoriasis and TNF-related skin disorders. The project can be laboratory-based or a clinical study. The applications will be judged on the innovative nature of the proposed project and robust scientific rationale, subject to compliance with local, national and GCP/GLP guidelines.

Q: Do I need ethics approval before I apply for the grant?
A: The proposed research project should be designed to meet all local institutional and national regulations and be GCP and/or GLP compliant but does not need ethics approval in advance.

Q: Do I need approval from my hospital/department before I apply?
A: All applications must follow their own hospital/departmental policy.

Contracts

Q: Who owns the intellectual property associated with the work supported by the grant?
A: The intellectual property associated with the work supported by the Advances in Psoriasis Research Programme will, depending on local law, be owned by the investigator and/or institution. However, Wyeth will be granted an option to license any discoveries.

Q: Are there any restrictions or guidelines on publication of the results from the research?
A: No, the results of the research may be published, however, Wyeth may review the manuscript prior to publication for accuracy and to protect intellectual property and/or, where relevant, proprietary data of Wyeth.

Q: If I move to another hospital/institution, what will happen to my grant?
A: The grant will be awarded to the principal investigator on the application form and will remain with that person as long as the study remains compliant with local institutional, national, GCP and or GLP guidelines.

Q: Will I need to sign a contract with Wyeth before starting the work?
A: The principal investigator will need to sign a standard contract with Wyeth to release the grant.

Q: How many grants are being awarded?
A: There will be a total of six grants each worth EURO 100,000.

Q: Will there be another Advances in Psoriasis Research Grant Programme launched next year?
A: The Advances in Psoriasis Research Grant Programme has been launched in 2007 and this series of six grants, each worth EURO 100,000, is expected to support research programmes in 2008–2009. Depending on the success of this initial programme, Wyeth Pharmaceuticals will consider whether it will be repeated.

Q: When will I find out if I have been awarded an Advances in Psoriasis grant?
A: The closing date for applications is 29 February 2008. The expert panel will convene in April/May 2008 and final notification of the successful applications will be in May/June 2008.

Q: When does the research project need to be completed?
A: Successful applicants will be informed in May/June 2008 and the grant will be provided in stages. 60% will be awarded at the project start in 2008 and 30% in 2009 and 10% on study report. It is expected that the project will be completed by December 2009.

A: Wyeth Pharmaceuticals has convened an expert panel of international leaders in dermatology to adjudicate on the selection of the successful applications. The applications will also be reviewed by the medical department within Wyeth Pharmaceuticals for suitability for funding to ensure that there is no potential overlap with previous or ongoing research projects.
